Interview with a Vampire Fashion PR Intern
I’ve always dreamt of working in fashion PR and this summer my dream became a reality. Over the past 7 weeks, I’ve learned so much about the culture of PR and gained more confidence in my communication skills. I know the knowledge I take away from this experience will help me in any career choice down the line. During the first half of my internship, I’ve already had the opportunity to assist in the planning and execution of two client events, star in my first YouTube video, and create client & agency content for a variety of social media platforms.
Overall, here are the top 3 things I’ve learned so far as an intern at AMP3 PR:
1. Social media is my forever friend.
In my free time, I am constantly checking my social media for pop culture updates and inspiration from my favorite fashion and lifestyle bloggers. During this internship, I’ve enjoyed learning the power of social media in a professional setting and how much it can make or break a brand. A company’s presence and engagement on social media is key to being able to connect with their audience, resulting in brand exposure and brand loyalty. I’ve also learned how to use different analytics programs to measure results including Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Onlypult.
2. Two words: EVENT PLANNING
One aspect of the industry I’ve enjoyed the most is event planning. Event planning involves a lot of research and preparation. Research into different venues, caterers, vendors, and guests, and then the preparation to pull it all together. I’ve learned that strong communication is necessary, and the ability to effectively manage my time and stay organized for each event is essential. In the end, it’s so rewarding to see everyone’s hard work come alive and be rewarded on event day. Getting to meet the editors and influencers I’ve helped research and keep track of along the way has also been really exciting. I can’t wait for more events in the future.
3. Research, Research, RESEARCH!
The ability to pull together efficient and effective research is definitely one of the most critical skills I’ve gained over these past seven weeks. It can be tedious, but it is so crucial. I’ve spent a lot of time researching emerging brands, influencers, media outlets, competitors and current events. PR professionals use this research to help develop successful pitches, interesting blog and social media content, and just generally stay on top of what’s going on in the world.
I look forward to seeing what the final 7 weeks of my fashion internship will bring.
