Ten Fashion Predictions for 2019

Maria Pierides

We’re coming to the end of 2018 (where did the time go?!) which means it’s time to look forward into the new year – in particular, what fashion trends will be blowing up in 2019.

We’ve rounded up our ten trend predictions for the new year, based on the latest Spring 2019 catwalks and our constant eye on the fashion ball.

What ones will you be trying out?

Waterproof - But Make It Fashion

Weather-wise, the start of the year is seldom great for us, as we are met with below freezing temperatures and countless showers. This means that fashion sometimes takes a back seat, as we have to make more practical outfit choices – especially when it comes to footwear and outerwear. Luckily, the fashion Gods were listening to our prayers, and have delivered some of the most fashionable waterproof pieces we think we’ve ever seen. The bright yellow waterproof coat at Marc Jacobs was particularly inspiring! 2019 means no longer having to sacrifice fashion for dryness, as next year, we can have it all!

Fashionable Flats

You can jump for joy (especially because it’ll be easier and more comfortable than ever!) as flats are officially on-trend in 2019! The Spring 2019 collections had no shortage of fashionable flats on the catwalks, and we’re already seeing an abundance of fancy flats in our favourite online and real life (yes, those still exist) stores. Here’s a good tip: the fancier the flat, the more en vogue. Valentino debuted some fringe embellished flats, and we’re pleased that there are more purse-friendly options out there too.

Neon

Remember when pretty pastels were all anyone could talk about? Well, pastels are a thing of the past! Times have changed, because soft and muted colours are out, making way for the brightest neon imaginable. Bright colours were big during New York Fashion Week (click here to check out all of the biggest NYFW S19 trends to refresh your memories) but next year is all about taking the trend one step further. The brighter, the better! If you don’t need sunglasses when you look in the mirror, you’re not doing it right!

Sequins

As self-confessed magpies, we will never stop trying to make sequins happen. Luckily, we don’t have to try very hard these days, because the new year is going to be overflowing with metallics and sequins. Just look to the latest Giorgio Armani, Halpern, Ashish and Gucci collections if you don’t believe us. You’ve probably been searching for something along the sequin route for the upcoming party season (we know we aren’t the only ones who HAVE to ring in the New Year in a sparkly, sequinned, almost-blinding ensemble) but 2019 is cranking it up a gear. No longer will metallic and sequins be reserved for the biggest parties of the year, as there’s a sequin for everything. From shoes to trousers to blazers and even hats (true story!) there is no corner left un-sequinned. And we are here for the fashion trend!

Headgear

Not just for bad hair days and sun protection, hats are going to be all the rage in 2019. Akin to some of the other new-season trends, it’s a case of the bigger the better in the hat department. Gargantuan hats are blowing up in 2019, and nothing is off limits. It isn’t just hats that are going to be big (literally) next year, as other types of headgear are also getting a big thumbs up. 70s approved headscarves in particular – and extra style brownie points if they’re printed styles!

Hippie Chic

And speaking of 70s, the hippie trend is also back with a vengeance. 2019 is incorporating some of the most iconic trends of the 60s and 70s, by way of tie dye prints and hippie-reminiscent cuts and fabrics. Dior, Stella McCartney, Prada, Missoni and Prabal Gurung all did a great job of throwing it back to the good old days (so we hear) and we can’t wait to start injecting some of it into our new year wardrobes.

Check Mate

Tartan is going to be big next year – and you don’t have to be a Catholic school girl or Cher Horowitz lookalike to get involved! Michael Kors, Burberry and Versace are just some of the big name designers who have made a case for the check print for the new season, and there are countless ways to revamp the trend. A new and exciting way is to play around with colour combinations, as the check print is about so much more than the classic red and green tartan combination. (Although that is a classic for a reason, and you certainly won’t be making a fashion faux pas if you stick to the iconic colour scheme.) Play around with a brightly coloured check print suit, or mix and match by way of some yellow check trousers and a bold, blue blazer. The world is your oyster!

Prints, Prints, Prints!

Since we are on the subject of playing around with traditional colour schemes, another big trend of 2019 is all about seeing animal print through new and more vibrant eyes. Even though classic animal print isn’t going anywhere (in particular leopard print – as seen on the Victoria Beckham and Dolce and Gabbana Spring 19 catwalks) the new year is also about new colour combinations; and the brighter, the better! Neon zebra print? You better believe it! Multi-coloured leopard print? It would be rude not to!

Bows and Frills

Finally, two of the most feminine trends of the new year! If you like ultra-feminine fashion, then this is going to get your juices flowing. Bows and frills were all over the New York, London, Milan and Paris catwalks for the Spring 2019 collections, with everyone from Marc Jacobs to Gucci to Emilia Wickstead to Alexander McQueen all throwing their hats into the ring. As with all hot trends, there’s already an abundance of pieces with frills and bow embellishments out there, and we’re completely obsessed! Go as bold or as subtle as you like, there’s no wrong way to wear this feminine trend!

Oversized Everything

Go big or go home is a mantra we have always lived by – and 2019 is about taking that as literally as possible. We’ve already covered oversized hats, but the oversized trend has gone so much further than headgear. Larger than life silhouettes, multi-layering to achieve aforementioned large silhouettes, baggy clothing, – it’s all on trend! We’re particularly fond of oversized sweaters right now, as they help us cope with the bitter New York City chill without forcing us to neglect fashion’s latest trends. Win, Win.
