Top 3 White Carpet Looks: The Met Gala

Last night, celebrities gathered on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC for “the Oscars of the East Coast”, “the party of the year”,  The Met Gala.

The fashion theme of the night was inspired by the Costume Institute’s  exhibition, which this year was “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.”  The exhibition was filled with pieces that Ms. Kawakubo designed over the decades for the fashion label she founded in 1969, Comme des Garçons. Her designs are complex, bulbous, and unconventional to say the least. But when all is said and done they are nothing short of works of art.

This year’s hosts were Anna Wintour (the Queen of the Met Gala obviously), Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams.

When it comes to style, the Met Gala encourages the outrageous and bolsters the bold; and with a theme inspired by the designs of Ms. Kawakubo, there was no shortage of either. Some celebrities in particular hold nothing back, and each year we anxiously wait to see how they can top the year before. Rihanna, who walked the carpet in  Comme des Garçons, is one such risk taking style trailblazer. And she did not disappoint. Her avant-garde look was enticing at every angle, with the perfect top knot bun, dramatic warm smokey eye, and full leg red lace up heels to complete the perfection.

Other inspired looks included Lily Collins’ billowy pink Giambattista Valli dress with dark bold lips and a cropped obsidian bob that paid homage to Ms. Kawakubo’s trademark hair, as well as Tracy Ellis Ross who rocked a more subdued yet still avant garde look in a vivid blue Comme des Garçons frock.

There is truly nothing like the Met Gala. Sure, we may be a little bias since it is in our neck of the woods, but without fail each year we are on the edge of our seats waiting to see how the stars will interpret the theme and wow us all.

Although there were many wow-worthy fashion moments this year, we narrowed down our list of absolute favorites. Here are NYC Firm AMP3’s top 3 looks from the Met Gala white carpet; 3 risk-takers whose daring style paid off.
